Land of the 2 a.m. Sun

Land of the 2 a.m. Sun

There are few ambient light sources I love to play with more than a bright ray of sunlight coming through thick curtains — especially when it happens at 2 a.m.

No, I didn’t take this in the Arctic Circle. This was another in my recent experiments to poke and prod at some of the possibilities afforded to us by extremely light-sensitive cameras. The “sun” is really a (fairly dim) Litepanel MicroPro. In real life, it was so dark I could barely see Claudia to pose her, but 1/6th, f/1.4, ISO 5000 took care of that.

Lens: 35mm f/1.4
Camera: Nikon D3s
Lighting: Litepanel MicroPro.

Thomas Lester - Awesome! You certainly would never know it’s not sun. Well done.

Tim Kamppinen - WOW! This is just spectacular.

Maria - I looooveee the lite panel!!! I want try painting with the light and night photos right now.

Jakob - Awesome shot, Ryan!

Chris Murray - This is gorgeous, I thought it was early morning sunlight coming through the curtains, but wow, its amazing what can be done with modern cameras, and some clever lighting. I recently shot a set of wedding rings at 2.8, ISO 8000 lit by the iPhone4′s led flash.

Brendan - …wow.

I mean WOW.

Kyle - The grain is gorgeous. I like the contrast of grain with what looks like sunlight.

geneoh - legit.

daniel stark - love how you push the camera to the extreme–awesome!

Brandyn Fidel - This picture is so well balanced that the high ISO noise isnt even an issue
